This project was the most high-tech building in Mississippi designed in the 80’s. In order to accommodate the many programmatic demands on this 130,000 square foot facility, many alternative approaches to determine adjacencies were tested during programming. The challenge was to integrate laboratories, administration, engineering, training, classrooms, a cafeteria, a visitors center and an Emergency Operations Center capable of housing staff for five continuous days. The building was designed to take advantage of the site views and context of the Mississippi River bluffs. Data cabling and telecommunications flexibility were given high design priority. Quality of space and aesthetics were extremely important so as to achieve the president’s goal of employee retention.
