The City of Tupelo following national trends saw rapid growth in tennis participation at its Rob Leake Tennis Facility located within City Park. Having a long-standing working relationship with Tupelo Department of Parks and Recreation, JBHM Architects was engaged to respond to these growth trends without adversely compromising the character and function of the existing park. The city wanted the ability to host regional and state tournaments meaning that it needed additional courts, all season courts, and unique amenities to make it one of the best facilities in the region.
JBHM master planned the entire park to accommodate this growth while incorporating additional program elements based on stakeholder meetings and current park and recreation trends. The result was the construction of a centrally located, one of the kind tennis pavilion, 6 court addition with 4 courts retrofitted with an existing “bubble” to make them playable in any weather conditions, and additional parking and walkway network. Other park improvements included the removal of a deteriorating pool, renovation of the existing pool house into an open air pavilion and restrooms, and splash pad. Future improvements slated include a community shelter/tennis pro-shop, new playground, and nature trail.
