The new South Campus Recreation Facility and Transportation Hub will shape the future of wellness and well-being on campus by creating a destination fitness center that will be an anchor for student life, inspiring an active lifestyle for Ole Miss students, faculty, and staff. The program of spaces will include approximately 100,000 net square feet; 135,000 gross square feet, with a grossing efficiency of 35%. To accommodate a growing population and increased demand for recreational programming, the University of Mississippi selected HOK & JBHM Architects to develop the overall vision for a flexible, state-of-the-art facility that can accommodate the University’s current and future recreation needs. The Design Team previously studied the Planning and Pre-Design opportunities for the New South Campus Recreation Facility and Transportation Hub. The proceeding Programmatic study builds on the momentum of the May 2015 Pre-design report and provides an additional layer of detail to facilitate the goal of making the new facility a “Hub” for student activity at the University of Mississippi. Located on the University’s South Campus, the proposed expansion and renovation of the Whirlpool Site creatively repurpose portions of the existing building in a sustainable and economical manner to provide ample space for fitness activities and amenities desired by students. This new facility will also include office space for the Parking and Transportation Department. Key areas of programming include: strength and cardiovascular training, a rock climbing & bouldering center complete with ropes course, several multi-purpose studios, indoor-outdoor functional training zone, two indoor basketball courts.
